Energy accounts for the largest share of anthropogenic global greenhouse gas emissions, as around two-thirds of energy production still comes from fossil fuels. 78% of the energy consumed in the world takes places in cities, and projections show the urban population of the world is expected to constitute approximately 70% of the world's population in 2050. It is also an element of resilience for cities. Sustainability of urban energy policies is of vital importance for renewable energy sources, especially energy efficiency operations, to have a significant share in urban energy needs.
